SCC Welcomes Scotland Bill Report
Commenting on today’s publication of the Scottish Parliament Scotland Bill Committee’s report, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:
“We welcome the direction of travel represented by the Scotland Bill Committee’s report. One of the key additions to the devolved settlement that has been proposed has been the granting of borrowing powers to the Scottish Parliament. This is long overdue, but must be meaningful if it is to succeed and contribute towards Scotland’s long term economic prosperity." Read More

SCC Welcomes Hutton Report on Pensions
Comme nting on today’s publication of Lord Hutton’s report on public sector pension provision, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:
“Lord Hutton has been thorough in his analysis of public sector pension provision in the UK and has recognised that many schemes have become too burdensome on the taxpayer, whilst the private sector has long recognised the need to reform the pension plans for their own employees. When we met with Lord Hutton, we reinforced to him the need to bring the public sector back into a closer alignment with pensions available to the majority of Scottish staff."

Interest Rates on Hold - But for How Long?
Commenting on the decision by the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to keep interest rates on hold at 0.5% for a further month, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:
“We welcome the fact that interest rates have remained on hold at 0.5%, as we firmly believe that the real risks to our economy lie on the downside. However with inflation still rising, albeit in large measure as a result of January’s VAT increase, the time will come when the Bank of England move to begin the process of returning interest rates to more normalised levels." SCC Welcomes Proposals to Bring Further Devolution of Road Traffic Laws
Scottish Chambers of Commerce has today welcomed a proposed SNP amendment to the Scotland Bill which would give the Scottish Parliament greater powers to set speed limits than is currently proposed in the Scotland Bill. Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:
“This is a sensible suggestion which would give the Scottish Parliament a great deal of flexibility in terms of setting speed limits on Scottish roads. A number of our members are seeking an increase in the speed limit of HGVs on single carriageway roads from 40mph to 50mph in order to reduce congestion and improve fuel efficiency. As the Scotland Bill currently stands, this power would not be available to the Scottish Parliament, despite the devolution of Road Traffic laws that it contains.
“Scottish Chambers of Commerce therefore supports this key amendment to the Bill and we would urge MPs of all parties to support it.”

“The committee have conducted a thorough examination of the public sector enterprise support landscape in Scotland and have reached some broadly sensible conclusions. They have correctly identified that there is no appetite in Scotland’s business community for yet another fundamental re-imagining of the role of our enterprise support agencies barely three years after the last review.
